Fire rating is a key factor when selecting building materials such as wall panels, ceiling systems, and interior decorative surfaces. Among all classifications, Class A fire rating is the highest level under the ASTM E84 standard used in the United States.

A Class A fire rating indicates that a material has the best performance in resisting flame spread and smoke development.

Requirements under ASTM E84:

  • Flame Spread Index: 0–25
  • Smoke Developed Index: 0–450

What it means in practice:

  • Fire spreads very slowly across the surface
  • Smoke generation is controlled
  • Suitable for high-risk and public buildings

Class B materials have moderate fire resistance.

Requirements:

  • Flame Spread Index: 26–75
  • Smoke Developed Index: 0–450

Performance:

  • Faster flame spread than Class A
  • Still acceptable for many residential or light commercial uses

  • Choose Class A for strict building codes and public spaces
  • Choose Class B for general residential or low-risk environments

In modern commercial projects, Class A is increasingly preferred due to stricter fire safety regulations.
